Startup Site Visits
On Wednesday, December 11, our Gold and VIP Pass holders have the option of attending private Startup Site Visits (RSVP required) at the startup headquarters below. In addition to learning how these companies create environments for big breakthroughs, you’ll hear directly about their vibes and values, get a look inside some inspiring spaces, and connect with other entrepreneurs who are leading change.
Why we picked this site.
At the forefront of agile development for more than two decades, Pivotal Labs has worked with some of the most innovative companies in today’s market including Twitter, Salesforce.com, Groupon, and TaskRabbit. They believe that the only way to build truly great software is to assemble and educate great teams. In line with lean principles, they focus on customer-driven development.
Kiva is making use of lean principles to better serve lenders and borrowers. On the lender side, emphasizing experimentation and validated learnings has helped them understand not only what motivates lenders to make a loan, but to identify key user problems so that Kiva can invest in the right products and features for their site. Whereas on the borrower side, lean startup principles have enabled Kiva to launch pilot projects like Kiva Zip in order to lower the cost of capital and expand access to financing for entrepreneurs in Kenya and the US.
Last May, WeWork Labs expanded from New York to open it’s first San Francisco office in the heart of SOMA. This pre-incubator for early-stage startups has hosted many growing companies, including The Lean Startup Conference, with many notable alums going off to YC, 500 Startups, and TechStars. WeWork Labs supports the launch of innovative new technology products by promoting an environment friendly to lean principles.
In just a few years, Square has evolved from a 20 people startup with a promising product, to a major player making commerce easy around the globe. Through this growth, they’ve stayed close to their roots which enabled early successes: listening to customers, tight feedback loops, data driven decision making, agile development and daily deploys, appropriate dose of scrappiness, and overall a hunger to do right by their customers day-in and day-out.
Each site is approximately within a two-mile radius of Nob Hill, and we’re holding the visits rain or shine. You must get yourself to each site, and you must arrive on time. Any of the following will get you around: walking, taxi, Muni, and Uber.
